Muddy Volcanoes

judetul Buzau, Muntenia

AddressCom. Berca,

Discovered for the first time in our country in 1867, during the prospect of oil, by Frenchman H. Cognand, Muddy volcanoes are a natural unique phenomenon, fascinating both through its nature andlandscape, looking like the moon soil.

Muddy volcanoes are located in Curvature Subcarpathians, in Berca commune from Buzau county, being formed due to the eruptions of gas from the ground, leading mud and water to the surface. Known in the area as "pacle", mud volcanoes have the same structure as real volcanoes inside them producing similar processes. In other words, they're miniature volcanoes whose cones do not exceed 5 to 6 meters height and the depth from which the "lava"is thrown to the surface is much smaller. Finally is the same result, that is mostly an arid area, but spectacular in the same time.

Muddy volcanoes phenomenon can be seen in two separate points, called "Paclele Mari" (coordinates 45 ° 20'23 "N 26 ° 42'33" E) and "Paclele Mici" (coordinates 45 ° 21'30 "N 26 ° 42'46 "E).

Besides an appearance of moon, totally great, due deep or at the surface landslides, with a dry ground, crossed by many small or large ditches, and although in this area is soil sulfur and salted, here meet a series of special plants, unique in our country, characteristic of Central Asian areas, and not of the temperate climate in Romania, such as: Nitraria schoberi and Obione verrucifera.
