Description

Designed by Mrs. Acad. Prof. Dr. Ana Aslan, the National Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics "Ana Aslan" was founded in 1952 by a government decision.

The institute soon became famous, being the first institute in the world with this profile. Over the years, over 30 presidents and an impressive number of famous personalities of art and culture around the world were among the patients of the Institute and quickly reached a total of 600 beds in clinics in Otopeni and Caldarusani. An outpatient was organized in Bucharest, plus 190 geriatric offices throughout the country, including in the outside sections of the hotels in Eforie, Mangalia, Herculane.

During 1972-1985, the benefits of the state was between 15-17 million dollars a year. After 1990, there was inherently a more difficult time, overcome thanks to the global importance of the School of Geriatrics from Romania. In this way, there were restored and expanded the collaborations with clinics in Sweden, France, Italy, Spain, Indonesia, Thailand and the Middle East. New features have appeared in professional research and aimed for both preventing the risk factors from the age of 45 years, and specific treatment of the polipathology specific to the elderly.

In a program conducted in 2002 by the World Bank at the request of the Ministry of Health, whose objective was to evaluate the hospitals in the country, of the 23 hospitals assessed as viable, the total of 60 controlled, Institute Ana Aslan was evaluated as having prospects for the most spectacular development. Among the criterias that were the basis for this classification we specify:
Otopeni Clinic location is suitable, being outside the seismic zone of the capital, near the airport.
The Institute is both national interest and international with a 100% occupancy rate, making waiting lists for those who want to be treated.

In recent years there have been made investments of over 34 billion for rehabilitation of buildings and equipment with necessary medical equipment. The financing was done thanks to the funds obtained from the  Insurance House of Bucharest, prevention programs, Thempus Program and own revenues. In 2002, the Institute celebrated 50 years of activity, and Robert Taylor, World Bank representative in the final report it categorizes as "Pearl of the Crown" of hospitals in Romania.
The institute has research contracts with the most important institutions in the world.
