Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum

Campina, judetul Prahova

Phone0244 325598
AddressBlvd. Carol I, 166

Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum is located inside a house built in the period 1902 to 1904. The museum's collection includes personal items, furniture, library (works of art, autographs of writers from the same period as the artist), photos, letters, paintings and drawings (about 102 works) of the painter Nicolae Grigorescu (1838 - 1907), one of the founders of modern Romanian painting.

Painter Nicolae Grigorescu
lived in this building the last years of his life: 1904 - 1907 and here can be found his last workshop. He took refuge here towards the end of life, along with his entire family - his wife Maria Danciu and son, Gheorghe.

He chose the town of Campina because of the patriarchal air and especially for the lands of unique beauty: Prahova banks surrounded by hills hidden under specific vegetation, endless blue sky, elements often found in its paintings of that period.
The house, built by the artist, burned during World War I, because, unfortunately, there was established the German Headquarters which controlled the entire area and so, near the end of the war, a great fire ravaged it over.

Some objects, especially those on the ground floor have been preserved, which made possible the restoration of the main dining rooms (studio, library). Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything saved from the bedrooms upstairs, so that their reconstruction was impossible.

The reconstruction took place between years 1954 - 1955 and the memorial museum (ground and first floor) was opened to the public in 1957. Most of the items have been in family ownership, the rest were taken from private collections.
The restoration plans have been made by the architect from Campina - Popisteanu while Nae Guage, amateur sculptor and former student of Grigorescu for many years, participated together with Gheorghe Grigorescu, son of the artist, to rebuild the building.
