Description
Emperor Darius of Persia built a bridge here in 514 BC, to help him pass at the Scythian, but Greeks from the Pontic citadels had organised there a commercial factor.
Thanks to its strategic location, the fotress had the opportunity to supervise and control the entire border (limes) from the north of the Danube. Around the military camp will develop, thanks to the geographical importance, the city’s economy.
The fortress has a name of Celtic origin and will host the Romans. In this sense, Noviodunum becomes the headquarters of one of the legions charge with guarding the border. In the order of their succession, there were stationed units of Legion XI Claudia Macedonica, V Macedonia, then Legion I Jovia, or II Herculia and here was also the Roman river fleet - Classis Flavia Moesia.
Through this position the sultans sent armies against Moldova and, also, here passed the Russian armies during the Ottoman wars of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
In cartographic documents of the time, even since the tenth Century, we meet the Noviodunum name that is replaced by Isaccea, it is assumed that derived from Sacea, leader of the political formation who ruled these lands. The Genoese harbour we find along with the name Isaceea the Vicina name.
On this way there was the route of great invasions: Sarmatians, Goths etc.
