Ocnele Mari Salt Mine

judetul Valcea, Oltenia

AddressLoc. Ocnele Mari,

Description

Ocnele Mari is a city of Valcea county with a population of 3563 inhabitants. This is one of the oldest human settlements in this region of Oltenia, thanks to the important salt deposit here. The city is located in central-southern part of Romania, the Carpathian foothills of Valcea and along Parul Sarat valley.

Ocnele Mari can be reached going on the road DN 67 (Copacelu Street) and Alexandru Ioan Cuza Street that intersects with it. The village is situated in a valley at an altitude of approximately 320 m, being watched by hills with an altitude between 400 and 600 m.

Under these hills there is a salt massif of about 600 m thick, which represents the main natural resource of the city, exploited since ancient times, giving the name to the city (‘ocna’ means 'salt mine'). The salt exploitation has been done and still is done by extraction of salt clods.

From mid 1950, due to the emergence of Soda Plant Govora, was passed to the exploitation of salt through saturated solution by leads. This new system has led in recent years the collapse of underground caverns created by mining salt in saturated solution (brine) on an area of about 50 hectares, producing environmental and especially social issues. Another great natural wealth of the area is represented by tufa (‘bank’ as locals call it), and exploited it for various industrial products.
