Olari Church

Curtea de Arges, judetul Arges

AddressCuza Voda, 134

Curtea de Arges was known in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for the development of pottery. The pottery artisans from the largest district of potters have founded the first association and have built their own church, the Olari Church (olar=potter) and because most of the potters were from Moldavia, the church was built in Moldavian style.

Olari Church was built on the foundation of a former hermitage from 1300; the place of worship presents a picturesque,  countryside appearance combined with architectural elements of wood and brick. Olari Church was mentioned in documents for the first time in 1687.

The church is unique in this region of the country by illustrating death on the eastern wall of the place. Unfortunately the whole mural painting is in an advanced state of decay, the outdoor paintings, among which the painting of death was covered with plaster and the interiors are blackened.

In front of the facade begins an exterior covered staircase that leads to the tower, where the bells are placed. The church’s roof protects the facade, where are also the external frescoes.
