Orthodox Cathedral of Ascension

Targu Mures, judetul Mures

AddressPiata Trandafirilor

The Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension is the largest religious edifice from Targu Mures. The cathedral was built in downtown between years 1925 - 1934 at the initiative of Archpriest Stefan Rusu, on the place of the famous singing fountain of Bodor Peter. The cornerstone of the building was placed on May 10, 1925.

On December 2, 1934 was held the consecration of the cathedral, being also a symbol, signifying the entrance of the Romanian armies in Targu Mures in 1918. The church was built according to the plans of architect Victor Vlad from the Polytechnic of Timisoara, in the form of Greek cross, with equal arms.

The iconostasis was made in 1934 by Traian Bobletec from Nazna and painted by artist Virgil Simionescu from Lugoj. Due to the lack of funding, the painting was completed in the period 1970 to 1986.
Narthex walls depict images of Metropolitans of Transylvania in the seventeenth century, Ilie Iorest and Sava Brancovici, being framed by 12 medallions containing images of major Orthodox churches in Transylvania.

The central dome has a stained glass that depicts Christ blessing. The altar presents the apse with an impressive mosaic with a height of 12.30 m, depicting the Virgin mary with her Child Jesus and the cathedral bells were made in Timisoara.
