Ostrov Hermitage

Calimanesti, judetul Valcea

Ostrov  hermitage has the patron "Nasterea Maicii Domnului" and is located on an island of the accumulation lake of the hydra-electric power station Calimanesti on the Olt river, being linked to the spa resort Calimanesti-Caciulata by a bridge, at a distance of 5 km from the railway halt Calimanesti-Jiblea. The church was founded by Neagoe Basarab and his wife Despina between 1520-1521.

The altar was painted in 1752, the rest of the church being painted in fresco style, of a remarkable artistic value and was finished in 1760. Also in that period, the old inscription was replaced with a Romanian text written with Cyrillic letters.

The royal icons are very old, some assumptions say that are even the original. The Virgin Mary icon was restored in 1791 by Ion Zugravul. On 22 December 1838 the cells and the existing buildings were destroyed by a fire, after that being reconstructed in 1940 on the groundwork of the old church. The main restorations were made in 1940, 1956-1957, 1962-1963.

From Neagoe Basarab's reign remained three icons: "Saint Nicolae", "Alight from the Cross" and "Saint Sava", all of great artistic value, currently in custody of the National Art Museum of Romania. Since the XVI th century until 1890, Ostrov Hermitage was inhabited by nuns. During the construction of the hydra-electric power station Calimanesti was necessary that the church, along with the island to be raised by about 6 m, in order not to be flooded, and after that the house of the priorship was rebuilt. The whole ensemble is a beautiful park which gathers a total of 47 species of trees, shrubs and roses.
