Pascani Municipal Museum

Pascani, judetul Iasi

AddressPiata Moldovei, 2

Pascani Municipal Museum was founded on December 1, 1997 after a decision of the Local Council Pascani. Pascani town was mentioned in official documents since 1453 and has many archaeological areas which represents the evidence that these lands have been inhabited since the Paleolithic. The archaeological and ethnographic evidence required to be collected and stored in a specially arranged place. Also, Pascani gave our country great cultural personalities: writers Mihail Sadoveanu and Petre Varlan, Metropolitan Visarion Puiu, academician Constantin Ciopraga, priests Cicerone and Iordache lordachescu. After these criteria was founded Pascani Municipal Museum.

Currently, the museum collection is focused on two main fields: the ethnographic and the historical-archaeological. The archaeological pieces come from the following areas: Prisaca; Fantanele; Bosteni; Hartoape; Dumbrava; Topile; Heci; Tatarusi; Gura Badilitei; Ruginoasa.

Worth mentioning some of the items found: silver coins since 1402, Romanian currency from the time of Commodus (193 AD), Cucuteni urns, pots of Dridu culture, new culture vessels, many prehistoric tools and weapons, Neolithic and Eneolithic axes, osteological fragments of mammoth from Siret Valley, Totem and anthropomorphic idols.

The collected ethnographic pieces succeeded to highlight ethnographic areas that have not been investigated by specialists in the field, for example: Lunca, Heci, Cristesti, Dumbrava. Also, there have been investigated the areas: Topile, Hartoape, Gastesti, Tatarusi, Valea Seaca, Motca, Bosteni, Sodomeni. The significant amount of ethnographic objects are in the museum: groom and bride costume made from wool, "zabun" (long wool coat for men), wool skirts, "berta" (head dress for women), "buduroi" (chimney), wood plug, etc.

In the museum's collection are also religious objects, military decorations, books and icons and an important collection of coins, since ancient times till now, medieval weapons from the two world wars and a few older images of Pascani city. The exhibition activity started in June 24, 2001 has brought many visitors from Pascani city, but also from its surroundings.
