Description

Peles Castle is the most important touristic site of Sinaia city. Peles Palace is one of the best maintained royal palaces in Europe. It was built between 1875-1883. The cornerstone dates from the day of 22 August 1875 and was put by the architects Doderer and I. Schultz.

Peles  Castle
was the summer residence of King Charles I. After his death in 1914, Peles Castle was transformed into a museum. The exterior of the castle is specific to the German Renaissance style; the 160 rooms have different architectural styles (German, English and Italian Renaissance German Baroque, Hispano-Moorish, French rococo).
The palace’s construction and decoration works from the period 1873-1883 have cost about 6.5 million lei gold and the total costs until 1914 were about 16 million lei gold.

Peles Castle presents numerous annexes: the Economat, the Body Guard, the stables, the hunting house, the Turret, power plants. Later, it was built Villa Sipot which have been used for some time as a work space for the architect Karel Liman. The construction of Pelisor Castle and Villa from Stana Regala (Poiana Stanii) began according to his plans.

By the end of the construction of Peles Castle, King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth have lived inside the Turret, whose construction was finished in a shorter time. Even Charles II lived there in between years 1930-1940, when he was King of Romania.

It should be noted that Peles Castle was the first castle to have electric power in Europe. This was possible because the electricity was provided by its own power plants, on the banks of river Peles. It should also be mentioned that Peles is hosting one of the most important and most valuable collections of paintings in Europe, summarizing about 2,000 pieces.

After the abdication of King Michael, in 1947, all Peles complex, besides Peles Castlet which entered the touristic tour, became a relaxing place for the people of culture of that time.

Peles Castle yard, representative for Bramantes type, with a fountain in the middle of the court, in the purest Renaissance style, impresses the visitor. The yard has a cheerful decor, plants and flowers that surround the palace, the facades are brought to life through numerous elegant designs. Peles Castle interior impresses with carved wood and colorful stained glass.
