Peri Monastery

judetul Maramures, Maramures

AddressLoc. Peri,

At a small distance of the Sapanta municipality, in Peri village, there has been an important monastery founded by the Dragosesti princely dynasty. Initially, in this area there was built a small hermitage that was given in the care of the ancestors of Dragos Voda "The Saint Archangel Michael" the protector of the family. This happens before Sas Voda and his sons, Balcu and Drag, to found at Peri the first monastery in Maramures. Drag and Balcu princes, grandsons of Dragos, offered to the monastery properties and lands and have built a stone church on the 13 of August 1391, at their request, the monastery is raised at the rang of “Stavropighie Patriarhala” with the right of jurisdiction over eight counties .

Peri Monastery
was for 312 years, with small intermission, the headquarters of the Roman Orthodox Diocese of Maramures. Abbot Pahomie encouraged the development of old hermitages Barsana, Cuhea and the White Church, by establishing new settlements. He also laid the foundation, at Peri Monastery, of the calligraphers school. At these schools there have been copied and translated in Romanian for the first time the "Psalter", "Acts" and "Gospel". Also at Peri worked a printing company who printed books and Christian teachings. The city has hosted dozens of Orthodox bishops of Maramures, among which Joseph and Stoica, the Primate of the years 1690-1711.

Destroyed and disbanded in 1703 during the anti-Habsburg uprising of Francis II Rakoczi, Peri Monastery, by the care of Gregory Luta from Sapanta church, wants the revival of it. It will be located in a secular forest, in an arboretum. It will be built in Maramures style of solid wood and will be placed on a stone pedestal. The impressive tower of about 78m will transform the edifice in the highest wooden church in the world.
