Petofi Sandor Memorial House

Petofi Sandor Memorial House is protected by the castle built between 1740 - 1760 by Teleki family and is offered for public visitation in 1960.The great musician Francz Liszt and writer Jokai Mor visited the memorial house in quality of guests. At the residence of the great Hungarian poet Sandor Petofi wrote some of his poems translated today into several languages, between the years 1846 to 1847. The furniture, iconographic material, the poet's manuscripts were completed over the years through donations and forming a considerable heritage.

The oppositionist Count Teleki Sandor will be known in 1846 with the occasion of a trip from Transylvania to Carei. In 1847 in Baia Mare, he descended into a mine, where he wrote the poetry "in the mine". Between 8 September 1847 and October 20 1847, Petofi family lived in Coltau. During that time Petofi Sandor wrote the most beautiful love poems. His political creed is confided in 1847: "If people will be masters in poetry, is not far to master in politics, this is what this century teaches us, this is the goal we need to track, up with the people, to hell with the aristocracy! ".

In a letter full of dignity he required to be received in Bem's army in Transylvania, due to the attacks against him on grounds that he retired from the battlefield. On January 19 he leaves to Slimnic where he is received with great warmth by General Bem, where he attends his first fight. He is awarded with the "Medal for merit in war". During the withdrawal, on July 30th 1849 by the surrounding of tsarist troops, the poet Sandor Petofi was killed.

All over the world the national writer of the Hungarian people, Petofi Sandor knows an audience of the most eloquent, while delivering ardor of a romantic temperament with a fundamentally humanistic vision.
