Poenari Fortress

judetul Arges, Muntenia

AddressSat Capatanenii Pamanteni,

Description

Poenari Fortress is located at an altitude of 850 meters and is called "the eagles' nest of ancient brave men", citadel which, hundreds of years ago, was part of a chain of fortifications that defended the northern part of the Romanian Land.

Poenari Fortress is situated 27 km from Curtea de Arges, on a small plateau of Mount Cetatea, accessible through the 1480 concrete steps. Poenari Fortress is a sight of great importance in Arges gorges and remained in history as the city built by Vlad Tepes himself.

In reality the ruler is the one who rebuilt the citatel named after Poenari village, citadel probably founded in XIV century as a place of shelter, by the legendary ruler Negru Voda, to whom are assigned the two signs near top of rock - like the traces left by some huge shoes.

In the XIII century there was only a tower of raw stone, but in the XIV century, the citadel covered the whole top of the rock with thick walls of stone, doubled in the upper part with brick. In the edifice could shelter only a garrison of about 30-40 soldiers, but enough to suppress the enemy army's movements.

Poenari Fortress is built with an elongated form, thick walls of two, three meters and five defensive towers: four round and one prismatic.

Although in the "Cantacuzino's Chronicle" is written that the fortress was built on the orders of Vlad Tepes who, wanting to punish the boyars and the townspeople: "... he took them all to Poenari and have all worked on the city until they broke theirs clothes...", it seems that this event is tied only to its restoration.

Poenari Fortress was the last refuge of the prince before going to Transylvania. It was among the fortifications that helped the final victory of the Romanians in the year 1462. Vlad Tepes have the merit of having delayed for at least seven decades the Ottoman expansion to southern and central Europe.

The last restoration of the fortress was made between 1969 and 1972, when they hardened and lifted up the walls and there were built access steps that make possible the visiting in the best conditions of the entire fortress.

A concrete staircase reaches from the foot of the mountain, from the road, up to the ruins and from its height one can admire one of the most beautiful sights; also, in the distance one can see the peaks of Fagaras mountains and Iezerului and Papusii lands.
