Prislop Monastery

judetul Hunedoara, Transilvania

Phone0254 777502
AddressLoc. Silvasu de Sus,

Prislop Monastery is located in a meadow, and is part of a wonderful landscape. At 13 km from Hateg, Prislop Monastery symbolizes one of the most important places of Orthodox worship in the Transylvanian region.

Prislop Monastery was built in the second half of the fourteenth century by Father Nicodemus, later sanctified, considered today as organizer and tutor of Romanian monasticism in the early Middle Ages. The Father came from the Romanian Country, where he founded the monasteries Vodita and Tismana. Prislop Monastery is a representative of  triconch style.

The second founder of the monastery was Lady Zamfira, daughter of Wallachian prince Moise Basarab, who retired in Transylvania after his father's death. Tradition says that Lady Zamfira was very sick when she came to Prislop and healed by drinking water from the spring with healing powers from the monastery's courtyard. The tomb is found in the church's pronaos.

The most valuable object of Prislop monastery is the miracle-working icon of Virgin Mary, donated by lady Zamfira in 1580, when the church's restoration was completed. One of the monastery's abbots, Ioan of Prislop was for 20 years (1585 -1605), metropolitan of Transylvania. The monastery had a tumultuous activity. Prislop Monastery was burned in 1762 at the order of General Bukow and the Orthodox monks were expelled. For nearly two centuries, the monastery was subordinated to the Romanian Church United with Rome (Greek Catholic).

Prislop Monastery was back in its first cult in October 1948. A month later was brought to Prislop the Father Arsenie Boca. With degree in theology and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, Father Arsenie Boca is seen as the third founder of the monastery for that, time of 41 years when he was abbot and, then, confessor of the monastery, reorganized it, rebuilt it and painted it, giving it the shine of today.
