The museum was founded in 1909 at the initiative of Prof. Eng. Dimitrie Leonida.
Dimitrie Leonida (1883 - 1965), energy specialist, professor, began by buying valuable pieces concerning the technique introduction in Bucharest of the last century.

With help from the professor most of the collection was gathered, the book and photos stock. The building is located in Carol Park, was part of the exhibition complex built at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The Museum collection includes over 6,500 pieces from: mechanics, electricity, chemistry, nuclear energy, magnetism, mining, hydraulic oil industry, calculating machines, electro-engineering, heat, lighting, cinema, energy, telecommunications, aerospace, printing and typewriters, engines and industrial land transport, library (25,000 volumes of science and engineering).

The exposure impresses the eye with: steam engines of 8 hp (1888), air blower from the furnace in Hunedoara made in 1883, two electric generators in 1882, an electric motor of the first tramway in Bucharest, that started to work in 1894, the engine of the first Romanian Navy submarine "Dolphin" and others.

The museum
gathers remarkable documentary pieces, depicting the inventive spirit of the Romanian people, including the world's first aerodynamic car designed by Romanian engineer A. Persu, the railway switchgear with siding and wooden heart, pictured in 1600 by the miners from Brad, different machines manufactured by Romanian factories, first steam mill in Romania, the dynamos used to illuminate Cismigiu, Royal Palace and the National Theater etc. The collection has over 10,000 pictures.
