Radu Voda Monastery

Bucuresti, Muntenia

Phone021 3307355
AddressRadu Voda, 24A

Holy Trinity - Radu Voda Monastery is located in central Bucharest, on the banks of Dambovita, near Union Square, near the Patriarchate’s hill, across the Curtea Veche. The Radu Voda Ensemble is considered historical artistic and spiritual Romanian monument. The monastery has a tumultuous history similar to an icon of the Romanian people history, with many obstacles, with defeats and victories.

In this place on the banks of Dambovita archaeological remains of the oldest settlements in this region were discovered, some vestiges dating back to the Paleolithic. Even by the Geto-Dacian time, this settlement was strengthened. The first church, which was founded around the 1500s and the second (ca. 1560) were destroyed.

Currently, Radu Voda complex is composed of the Church, the Theological Seminary, the bell tower and the ruins of the Royal Palace. Radu Voda ensemble has been extensively degraded over time: it was badly damaged during the retreat of Sinan Pasha. After it was dedicated to the Greek monks, when they left they took all the jewelry and the precious objects of the monastery.

In 1875, Titu Maiorescu, as Minister of Religious Affairs decided to demolish the settlement. The bell tower is 25 meters and is the highest tower in Bucharest.

Radu Voda Church impresses with a special architecture, with exterior walls 1.5 meters thick, sober and beautiful decorative elements, the veil and with the completely rebuilt interior fresco by Father Sofian Boghiu.

The narthex painting was made by Tattarescu. Inside the narthex there are found preserved in a beautiful shrine the holy relics of St. Necatrie Taumaturgul.
