Saint Dumitru Cathedral

Craiova, judetul Dolj

AddressMatei Basarab, 14

A special place among the old buildings occupies St. Dumitru Cathedral, protector of Craiova city, which appears on the city emblem. Built on the site of an old church founded by Craiova nobbles at the end of the XV century (1483) or the beginning of the XVI century, the Princely Church is considered to be the work of Matei Basarab - information written in a document in 1652.

With the support of King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth, was rebuilt from the ground by the architect Andre Lecomte Nouy, between 1889 - 1893. The consecration was held on October 16 1893, with pomp, under the pastoral of Bishop Bartolomei of Ramnicul-Noul Severin. The plan remained designed in shape of greek cross and has an open porch, a tower on the naos and two on the pronaos. It was painted by the French Menpiot and Bories.

St. Dumitru Cathedral shelters the relics of St. Nifon, Patriarch of Constantinople, of Saints Serghie and Vah and of the Holy Martyr Tatiana. Beside the Cathedral functioned the oldest school in Oltenia (after N. Iorga), School of priests and deacons.
In 1939, the church of Saint Dumitru of Craiova became the Metropolitan Cathedral. The Metropolitan heritage preserves valuable items, including a Byzantine vesel dating from the XV th century - the testimony of Romanian spiritual continuity on this space.
