Saint Haralambie Othodox Cathedral

Turnu Magurele, judetul Teleorman

Phone0744 531209
AddressIndependentei, 4

In the center of Turnu Magurele city there is a beautiful and imposing house of worship dedicated to Saint Haralambie. The church was built in the memory of those who sacrificed themselves in 1877 for Romania's independence.

The Cathedral, was built on the place of an ancient church, between 1900-1902, according to the plans of the french architect Andre Lecomte Nouy, who borrowed architectural motives from Curtea de Arges Monastery.

The construction was executed by the engineer Dimitrie Maimarolu, the same one that raised the Metropolitan Palace building in Bucharest and the Military Circle. The architecture of the building combines the baroque and byzantine styles.

The roof is covered copper broad and the interior painting is executed in oil on plaster glede, well finished. The solid oak furniture and the windows were executed in the country. It is said that Professor Nicolae Iorga, who visited in 1913 Turnu Magurele, has cataloged the Cathedral of Saint Haralambie as the third in Romania, after Curtea de Arges and the Three Hierarchs in Iasi.

Among the valuable objects found here we can mention a chandelier with seven arms, made of silver alloy, silver icons loaded from the old church, and other new objects, coming from private donations. It is easy to remark the harmony between all parts: from the mosaic to painting, sculpture in wood and bronze to zinc or stone and even the exterior decorations of the towers and eaves.
