Saint Nicholas Church

Radauti, judetul Suceava

AddressBogdan Voda, 4-6

Description

Built on the site of a wooden halidom, around the years 1360, Saint Nicholas Church is the oldest monument made of wall preserved in Bucovina. It was built by Bogdan I, the first independent prince of the Independent State of Moldova, and remains what it was - orthodoxy message of the period in this part of the country. The church is a Moldovan synthesis of three architectural styles: Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic. It was built in the second half of the fourteenth century of rough and carved stone, being the oldest stone building in Moldova.

In this truly "Pantheon of Moldova", are found the graves of princes Bogdan I, Latcu, Roman I, Stefan I, Saint Nicholas Church was an important cultural center, from whose workshops have come out bounded with gold and silver manuscripts, icons and other objects of worship. Prince Alexandru Lapusneanu decided in 1559 the augmentation of the building by adding the closed porch and replacement of stone frames of the windows. The tower bell is dated in 1781.

Restoring the original painting is also made by Alexandru Lapusneanu (later restored, XVIII-XIX centuries). However, from the time of Stefan cel Mare, a particular interest is represented by compositions of the altar (Last Supper, Communion of the Apostles, Washing feet), in part similar to those of Voronet altar.

Church of Saint Nicolae is considered the first princely necropolis of Moldova. Here are the graves of the first rulers of Moldavia: are found in the narthex the tombs of Lady Anastasia, daughter of Latco and wife of Prince Lurg, Ms Stana, mother of Stefanita Voda and the Metropolitan Ioanichjie, a contemporary of Stefan cel Mare; in the right side of the nave are found the graves of Bogdan and Latco and on the left are those of Roman I, Stefan I, Prince Bogdan (brother of Alexander cel Bun) and Bogdan - son of Alexandru cel Bun (In Engl. "Alexander cel Bun").

The building's plan is similar to a basilic (Roman-Gothic influence), no towers, unique in Moldavian architecture; above the interior lateral naves are false stands, rather secret, which are accessed from the spiral staircase in the narthex. The halidom was an important guidance model in the Moldavian architecture of XV-XVII centuries.

The Monastery of Saint Nicholas, with high artistic, architectural and decorative qualiities, is today one of the key monuments of artistic and cultural heritage.
