Saint Nicholas Wooden Church

judetul Maramures, Maramures (UNESCO)

AddressLoc. Budesti,

Description

Built in 1643, Saint Nicholas Wooden Church from Budesti represents an eloquent example of a typical church from Maramures. Representative in this sense is the structure of the monastery: with high interior space which manifests on the outside through the roof in 2 waters, of large proportions.

The master builder dared by his skill and talent to raise a church that produces a powerful emotion through monumentality, the robustness, the interior and exterior decorations and the icons on glass and wood. Some of these are part of the work of two artists of a certain value, Alexander Ponehalschi and Ianos Opris. The three rooms specific to the cult are: the narthex, the nave and the altar that surprises everyone that visits it.

Saint Nicholas Wooden Church is an original building, keeping nearly all conception, form, material and substance originating from the authentic building. This holy place could not be enlarged according to the population's growth, so it has retained its original shape.

The funerary monuments in the cemetery, the vegetation around the building, the slender figure, the size and robustness of the volumes, the sober decoration but in the same time consistent, composes the Wooden Church of St. Nicholas, which is located in the centre of the village.

This place of worship, which is rightfully called "cathedral", is an exceptional creation of the anonymous builders. The church is a good example of architectural genius typical for Maramures. It is a part of the first examples of this type and became the model for those who succeeded it.
