Sapientei Church

Bucuresti, Muntenia

Phone021 4107116
AddressSapientei, 35

The Spatientei church is located on the Mihai Voda hill in Bucharest. Some documents of 1696 testify that the church was built in 1594, by ruler Mihai Viteazul, in the place of small church from the fifteenth century, which is said to have been built by Vlad Dracul.

The yard of the Sapientei Church is the place where Prince Vladut, the son of Vlad Calugarul, was decapitated by the Turks at the age of 16 years, after only 2 years of his reign.

Some documents from the year 1433 talk about a wooden church, calling it the Church of Saint Nicholas or Saint Nicholas from Palcov. Between years 1558-1559 the church becomes a ruine and it is restored by the housekeeper Caplea from Stanesti, successor of squire Mogos, aunt of boyars Buzesti. The housekeeper brings to the Sapientei Church most of the objects necessary and dedicates the church as Metohija to the Simonopetra Monastery on Mount Athos. After her death, around 1585, she is buried in the yard of the wooden church.

Some legends say that the church would have had a miracle-working icon to which Michael the Brave swore to build the Mihai Voda monastery, considering a tradition which says that a new monastery has to be built on the ruins of an old one.
