AddressDornei, 5

Description

Silversmith's House - in this building currently operates Bistrita Folk Art School and is a representative monument of medieval civil architecture in Transylvania.

Entry into the building with a semicircular shape, is framed by two pillars, which ends withcompound caps, joined by a frontage of a rectangular shape. Tripartite windows at ground floor and first floor, have rectangular frames, provided at the top with consoles and cornice.

Only the second window of the ground floor is an exception, incorporating in a small way, portal drawing with the clear intention of highlighting the two bowls made of stone, different in shape, located in the upper arch of the window.

These cups were certainly the stone replica of the cups of gold and silver made by artisans in Bistrita. Inside, the building has on the ground floor a vaulted corridor, an ogival vault room and two more semi-cylindrically vaulted rooms.
A staircase, a Renaissance innovation, connects the ground floor of the floor with wood ceiling and beams, which is more spacious and brighter.

Silversmith's House has been amended many times inside. Burned in 1758 and in 1939 almost reached the demolition. Thanks to the intervention of Nicolae Iorga to the town hall, the house extended its living. After 1950, the building of street Dornei no. 5 became owned by the state, then being restored after the projectof  architect-restorer Sefan Bals.

On June 1, in 1969, Silversmith House, became after repairs a true architectural jewel, and has opened the cultural destination with a fine art exhibition. It later housed the exhibits of the History Department of Bistrita-Nasaud County Museum until 1986.
