Sinaia, judetul Prahova

Sinaia Monastery was founded in the eighteenth century and is the historic symbol of Sinaia, representing the first building constructed on that territory.

Mihail Cantacuzino Spatarul
is the monastery's founder, who, helped by his mother and his sister, Elena Stanca, made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, thus reaching Mount Sinai, where he held prayers at the monastery "Saint Catherine". Impressed by the biblical uniqueness of the visited settlements, he found on his return in Romania, a beautiful monastery which he called Sinaia, "in memory of the great Sinai", the monastery that worships the Blessed Virgin Mary. The building of the monastery began in 1690 and was completed in 1695.

Due to its strategic position (located on the Prahova Valley - trade route linking Bucharest to Brasov), the monastery have been the victim of numerous Ottoman and Austrian invasions. The Old Church is dedicated to the "Assumption" and is representative for the Brancovenesc architectural style.

The exterior of the church has the form of a Latin cross - the apses have rectangular shape, so unusual for that era. The entrance’s portal in the narthex is carved in stone, and shows Moses and his brother, priest Aaron. Moses holds in his hands the law tablets with the Ten Commandments and Aaron the leafed stick. In the middle of the portal it is kept Cantacuzino family’s coat of arms, the double-headed eagle which holds in the claws the signs of imperial power: the cross and the scepter.

The painting of the porch and narthex was mostly preserved in its original state and is the work of Parvu Mutu Zugravul.
The paintings from the porch’s dome illustrate moments in the life of St. Catherine (the protector of the Monastery on Mount Sinai), the Saint Dumitru (patron of the Romanian Country) and Saint Gheorghe (patron of Moldova and the military).

The votive painting depicts the founder of the monastery, Mihail Cantacuzino, surrounded by eighteen children (of which 12 adopted), the first wife (Maria) and second (Theodora), as well as other members of the Cantacuzino family, the top place being taken by the brother of the founder, High Steward Constantin Cantacuzino.

Inside the church are painted five rulers of the Romanian Country, with whom the founder was related: the mother, Elena, is drawn from Radu Serban (1601-1611), Constantin Serban (1654-1658) and Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521); Prince Serban Cantacuzino (1679-1688) was his brother and Stefan Voda Cantacuzino (1713-1716) was his nephew.

Mihail Cantacuzino is the one who founded the first hospital in the Romanian Land - Hospital Coltea (Bucharest) inside Coltea Monastery built also by him. About the buildings of Mihail Cantacuzino we can mention: a church in Ramnicu Sarat, Titireciu Hermitage from Oltenia and “Fundenii Doamnei" Church from Bucharest.
