St. Nicholas Cathedral

Brasov, judetul Brasov

As historical monument, the church dates back since 1292. In 1495 the church was built of stone by the rulers of the Romanian provinces. The old part of Brasov, Schei, is a touristic site throught the monumentality of Saint Nicholas church.

Saint Nicholas Cathedral was built of stone since 1495 by locals with the support of Neagoe Basarab, the Romanian Country ruler. Instead of this church existed in the past an old wooden worship place documentay attested in 1222.

Tradition says that the Romanian village in this area was a strong orthodox center.
The Orthodox Church and the Romanian school, built around it, represented an important spiritual and cultural center for the Romanians from the entire Barsei Land. Their action is spread over the entire Romanian space especially since the coming of Deacon Coresi who began here to print religious books in Romanian.

Many princes and their families have made significant donations to the church from Schei and even the Russian Empress, Catherine II, sent many donations, money and religious objects made of precious metal.

The architectonic style of the church was originally Gothic, but it suffered numerous Baroque restorations. In the eighteenth century the church plan expanded with the addition of chapels and a porch. Numerous donations of rulers of the two Romanian countries have decorated the church with a considerable collection of old icons.

Saint Nicholas Cathedral
was restored in the interwar period with the support of local people and preserves frescoes, works of the great painter Misu Pop.

In the cemetery of Saint Nicholas Church are buried important figures in local and national history as Dr. Aurel Popovici, Nicolae Titulescu an the priest Vasile Saftu.
