St. Peter and Paul Church

Cluj-Napoca, judetul Cluj

Address21 Decembrie 1989, 85

St. Peter and Paul Roman-Catholic Church, also known as St. Peter Church, or Szentpeteri templom, was built in the current form in neo-Gothic style in the mid-nineteenth century.

The foundation of the church dates from the fifteenth century and is located in the village of St. Peter in the east of Cluj. The village was destroyed during tartars invasions and then it was rebuilt. In 1560 the church became Unitarian and was again destroyed during the revolution led by Rakoczi, being rebuilt on the old site in 1711. Five years later it was given back to the Roman Catholics and in 1724 belonged to the Minorite believers (Franciscan Roman Catholic of the Minorite order).

The present edifice was built in 1844-1846 by Master Anthony Kagerbauer on the place of the old church which was in an advanced state of decay.
Initially, both inside and outside of the church were decorated as the Coronation church from Budapest. The current appearance is due to the changes made between the years 1844-1848 and in 1977 it was restored.

In front of the church is the baroque imposing portal, originally located in front of St. Michael Church, and behind the church is the statue of the Virgin Mary (St. Mary Protective statue, the Statue of plague), initially placed on the University Street. The statue was moved to be saved from the communist government.

Currently the church and the portal have been renovated, but the statue is very damaged, its position is very inappropriate for such a monument. Recently there have been public discussions for removing the statue in the place where it initially was.
