Stefan cel Mare Canvas

Galati, judetul Galati

AddressDomneasca, 2

Built by Spat company, after a contract with Galati County Council, the Moldavian Canvas "Stefan cel Mare" (canvas=panzar in Romanian) is almost a faithful copy of the ships with canvas that sailed on the Prut, the Danube, the Siret and even the Black Sea, when Stefan the Great (Stefan cel Mare) ruled.

It was built by some descriptions made one hundred years ago, but also after the prints at the monasteries in northern Moldavia. The ship has a length of 17.6 m, a width of 4 m, draft 1.8 m, the vessel displacement being of 60 tons. The vessel has a motor that will help propulsion when the wind will not be favorable. The ship owns communication and navigation equipment, useful for the cruises made on the Danube, Prut, Siret and the Black Sea. The rebuilding proposal of the Moldavian Canvas is mentioned in 1977, when two navigators, passionated by naval history, Maximilian and Cristian Popescu, managed to relent Iulian Simionescu the Director of Navrom Galati, in making a canvas composition. The idea has managed to implement, but the initiative was resumed by Maximilian and Cristian Popescu.

In the summer of 2004, the ship was presented for the first time at the 500 years celebration after the death of Stefan cel Mare. From that moment, the vessel was on the water for relatively short periods of time, in 2005 and 2006. In the last two years, the ship was climbed onto the shore. "Panzarul" was worth 1.2 million lei in the year in which it was launched to sea. More specifically, this was the amount of money offered by Galati County to the company that built it . The Navigation Museum in Constanta confirmed that the vessel is an exact replica of Stefan's crafts.
