Vaslui County Museum was founded in October 1974, with mixed profile, history and ethnography, led by first director Professor Constantin Popescu, curator of experience. The museum was appreciated since the very beginning, considered the country's youngest museum, and most accomplished in terms of thematic, scientific.

In "Stefan cel Mare" County Museum from Vaslui, the Department of Ancient History and Archeology is the most significant, both by the large number of items (over 18,000), but above all, by their great value. These pieces cover ancient, primitive medieval and ancient Roman history and at the same time, show an unbroken continuity of indigenous peoples living in the area of the current county Vaslui.

Also due to systematic or rescue excavations, cultural dowry of this section has been continuously enriched.
So from the Stone Age dates a wide range of objects, of which the most important are: kernels of flint, and awls from Malusteni, Blagesti, Banca, Balteni etc. (Paleolithic); pottery, tools and, especially, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic statuary groups from Dumesti, Blagesti, Schinetea, Igesti, Opris, Rediu, Garceni, Husi, Barlalesti, Dragesti, Rates Cuza, Chetresti, Duda-Epureni, Dodesti, Pojorani, Bogdanesti, Oltenesti, Voinesti etc. (neolitic-eneolitic); ornaments and cult objects from Albesti, Adjudul Vechi, Suletea, Deleni, Balabanesti, Armasoaia, Rafaila, Pungesti.

Metals age is well illustrated by the discoveries made in Poienesti, Fedesti, Epureni and, especially, Bunesti-Averesti, from which are two hoards of ornaments and coins of Husi-Voinesti type, of which stand out: links, tiara, gold jewelry and beads of glass paste.
Worth to mention the Bronze Age discoveries from Garceni, Tacuta, Voinesti, Lipovat, Bogdana, Puiesti, Rasesti, Tansa, Danesti, Duda, Arsura, Pungesti, Cretesti, Vutcani, Barzesti, Murgeni, Vaslui etc., where were found deposits of bronze objects, axes, sceptres of tiles and ornaments.

It can be noticed the same steadiness and continuity of the natives in these areas, in Daco-Romanian, post Roman and migration of peoples ages, in parallel with the penetration of the migratory phenomenon. For V-XI centuries, are revealed the isolated coins and monetary treasures from Dodesti, Voinesti, Danesti, Raducani, Fedesti, Falciu, and objects from Dodesti, Dridu type.
Department of Medieval History of "Stefan cel Mare" County Museum is one of the most prestigious sections and through the special value of its assets, it is an important attraction for the visitors. The most representative pieces are the coins and silver ornaments of the treasures of Schinetea (XV century) and Balti (XVI century).

Age of Stefan cel Mare is very well illustrated by: pottery: tiles, rosettes, brakes, shingles etc.; documents issued by the prince at "The Royal Courts" - Vaslui; textile fragments: from clothing and accessories, and, especially, coins - 2 silver coins without any inscription, from Alexander cel Bun etc. Some of these pieces were found in the excavations of the "Royal Courts" Vaslui and the Church of "St. Ioan the Baptist" in Vaslui (founded by Stefan cel Mare, from 1490). Among the most significant medieval monuments of XVI-XIX, stands out Floresti Monastery, from which were brought the following items: gold necklace containing ornaments, pottery, tools etc., all from the XVII-XVIII centuries.

The medieval spiritual culture is illustrated by the existence of objects from the well-known scholars: Nicolae Milescu Spataru and Dimitrie Cantemir through old books of the XVII-XIX centuries (written in Slavonic and Cyrillic), but also by the presence of the objects of worship. Starting from the revolutionary movement of 1848 to the moment of the Romanian State Union, in the premises affected to the modern section are presented both original songs as well as maps, photographs, documents of participation people of Vaslui at the most significant events at the end of the nineteenth century. A large area is for the War of Independence in 1877-1878, mostly through the legendary hero "Penes Curcanul".

The medal department of "Stefan cel Mare" Museum is organized on two levels: one wants to present the treasures and the ancient, medieval, Byzantine, modern coins collection and one exhibits the presentation of medals that are the donation made by Dr. Constantin Teodorescu to a museum from Vaslui. The last pieces entered in the heritage museum (1998) belong to the heritage of Baltati, being composed of a large number of silver coins, nearly 850 and objects for ornament use. It is a medieval treasure, in which are predominant the Polish coins from the time of Sigismund II Augustus, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.

The Department of Ethnography and Folk Art, opened in 1975, is structured according to the main and secondary occupations of the inhabitants of these lands. The heritage consists of traditional interior textiles in total of 425 pieces, with ceremonial or utility functions: towels, tablecloths, pillow cases, secular, carpets; traditional costumes and pieces related to some important dates or religious holidays. The masks from Voinesti village are distinguished by originality and by primitive vein that they have kept since prehistory, with a total of 170 pieces.

On March 11, 1989 was opened the contemporary art exhibition, as a result to the donation made by Dr. Constantin Teodorescu in Barlad, known collector and philanthropist. The collection "Dr. Constantin Teodorescu" is loaded not only by affective-nostalgic connotations, it is also one of the hypostasis of the imaginary museum of contemporary soul.

The Exhibition "Ion Sava (1900-1947)" was opened in 2002 and the 90 pieces present the graphic work of one who was a director, stage designer, playwright, journalist, sculptor and art critic in the interwar period.
