Suzana Monastery

Cheia, judetul Prahova

AddressCom. Maneciu

Suzana Monastery is located on Teleajenului Valley, at a distance of 40 km from the city Valenii de Munte and 14 km from the city Maneciu, in a splendid natural environment. Suzana Monastery symbolizes a representative of art ideal.

In 1740, a faithful believer from Sacele Brasov, named Suzana Arsicu, built a beams church. After a century, the wooden church that was dedicated to St. Nicholas, because of bad times, has come to be unusable and was changed in 1840 with another church, built of stone at the initiative of Bishop Chesarie of Buzau and the believers, with the Superior, Sister Suzana Albulet. But this church lasted only 40 years, being devastated in the earthquake in 1838.

In 1880 was initiated the construction of the current church wall (the second of the Ascension monastery). The construction was completed on July 25, 1882 and is dedicated to "St. Nicholas", as confirmed by the inscription.

Suzana monastery has another church - the chapel - built in 1911 during the time of Mother Superior Tomaida Perlea bearing The Virgin coverage. The church was built in the Muntenia style of architecture. The church is in a cross shape and consists of chancel, nave and narthex. The nave is separated from the narthex, forming a common space. The porch is closed and the ceiling is painted. The church has three towers, one above the nave and two on the narthex. The windows are large and have metal grating. There are two windows in the nave (one on each side) and 4 in the narthex (two on each side). The wooden temple presents floral decorations.

Suzana Church impresses by icons dressed in gilded silver. The floor is made of boards and the roof is made of tin. The oil painting is made in the church and bears the signature of master Peter Nicolau from Ploiesti, one of the best students of the great painter George Tattarescu.

After the restoration of the church in 1976, the painting was made by Gheorghe Vanatoru, the kickback of the monastery. In 1971 a fire which occurred in November and devastated the small church which as built in 1911, the tower and the abbey.

In 1965 were initiated the repairs of the whole monastic ensemble, all the homes being restored, equipped with bathrooms, plumbing, electrical installation, water, sewerage ( heading to drain water to river rock that pass near the monastery). All were made with money from the Holy Archdioceses of Bucharest and were finished in August 12, 1970.

The inner courtyard of the monastery was ample, but the buildings are closely connected to each other, composing a compact space, designed to last. The free space is paved with stone slabs. In the monastery is found a museum containing a collection of icons painted on wood and glass wrapped in plated silver, religious objects, many old books.
