Teleki-Bolyai Library

Targu Mures, judetul Mures

AddressBolyai, 17

Teleki-Bolyai Library from Targu-Mures has one of the largest collections of rare books in Transylvania, house of European culture of the past centuries.
The scientific collection with Encyclopedic structure, preserver of many rare bibliophile items, consists of over 200,000 volumes. Teleki-Bolyai Collection base was the result of the combination of the two major separate collections: Teleki, with 40,000 volumes and Bolyai, with a total of 80,000 volumes. These were supplemented over time with other funds from various traditional libraries from Transylvania: religious schools, private libraries and library of the Franciscan Monastery from Calugareni (Mures County).

The building, in which currently functions Teleki Library, was built in Baroque style with this destination, between years 1799-1802, by Count Teleki Samuel.
Idea of founding this library belongs to Teleki, who during his travels of studies in the universities from Basel, Paris, Utrecht and Leiden, acquired a thorough knowledge of humane and real sciences, which were recovered by selecting the most representative books of the European culture.

Established in the second half of the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, the collection reflects the ideas of European Enlightenment, sending the message of the current to the future ages. Samuel Teleki got all 33 volumes of the Encyclopaedia of Diderot and d'Alembert, famous contemporary lexicons for the content of complex information and publications of academies and scientific societies from Europe.
Worried about getting books, the founder bought books with illustrations made in the workshops of some famous engravers (Durer, Rubens, Holbein Jr.), atlases, hand colored botanical and zoological albums.

Of a special value is the work of Italian masters Giovanni Battista and Francesco Piranesi, a total of 29 volumes. Teleki acquired scientific books and bibliophile rarities: valuable manuscripts, a total of 52 incunabula, unique, first editions, books come from the famous publishing houses in the country and abroad, of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Teleki also chose the Greek and Latin classics works, forming the collection "Bibliotheca classica". A special place is occupied by his wife's library, Iktari Bethlen Zsuzsanna (1754-1797), owning 2,000 volumes, collection entirety preserved.

Bolyai Library, the second collection, has its name from two mathematicians Bolyai who lived and worked in the city of Targu-Mures and presents the dowry of the former local Reformed college, Bolyai high school. Formed over several centuries for use of students and teachers, the library developed in the same time with the school, founded in 1557, as Schola particula.
The reading room of the library waits for the researchers and readers, and the library exhibitions and Bolyai museum are visited every year by tourists from our country but also from abroad, enjoying a competent guide.
