Description

Openned on May 1, 1952, Alexandria History Museum works from 1974 under the name of Teleorman County Museum of History. The name was changed in 1998 into Teleorman County Museum. On November 13, 1997 the new headquarters of Teleorman County Museum were opened, located in the 1848 street, no. 1.

Structured on three levels, it has an area of over 2000 sqm. The museum inventory counted in 1997 a number of 57,764 pieces, organized in 65 museum collections: archeology, numismatics, ethnography, art, history and memorials.

Throughout its evolution, it was founded in 1952 as a city museum, in 1981 it was transformed into a Museum Complex and from 1997 it works in a new building.

Museum keeps collections of:
  1. archeology, mainly Neolithic and Geto-Dacian, which come from the following resorts: Ciolanesti Deal, Silistea, Vitanesti, Zimnicea Orbeasca Upper, Albesti, Magura - Bran, Magura - Buduiasca etc.;
  2. hoards found at: Poiana, Sfintesti, Schitu, Poroschia, Alexandria, Ulmeni, Balta Sarata etc.;
  3. a zonal ethnographic collection, put in value in the permanent exhibition.
The museum has a conservation laboratory and recovery workshops for ceramics, metal and paper. Between 2003 - 2004 there took place a research program in the process of collectivization of agriculture in Teleorman County. Currently the museum participates in an international project, which aims to study the life on Teleorman Valley from prehistoric times, opposite the National Museum of Romanian History and the University of Cardiff.

Teleorman County Museum is from 2006 pat of a Romanian-French program for study the Paleolithic habitation of Ciuperceni area, alongside the French Archaeological Mission in Romania, the Bucharest City Museum and the Institute of Archeology V. Parvan Bucharest. With support from the Informational Center of the European Commission in Romania, started in 2006, a citizen information program called "Discover your European family.
