The Annunciation Church

Ramnicu Valcea, judetul Valcea

AddressMircea cel Batran

Description

A very old religious building of Ramnic isThe Annunciation Church, with a date of foundation from the reign of Mircea Voda (1386 - 1418) or Mircea Ciobanul (1545 - 1552). The church was rebuilt from the ground after it was burned during the Austro-Turkish conflict of 1716-1718. The windows carved in stone date from the year 1747.

The church has the patron "Buna Vestire" (the Annunciation) and is situated in the center of Ramnic. It was built in 1747 by the nobbles Moldovean and Grigorie, from Sibiu, being included in the list of historic monuments.

The church was built in Brancoveanu style, appropriate size, being quite resistant. The church's porch is open, based on pillars carved in stone which means that it is part of the old church.

The painting is executed in fresco, richly ornamented and chromatic execution in Byzantine style. In the church's porch there are represented the hell on the right side and heaven in the left side, the door of the entrance being framed by a beautiful sculpture in stone which contains florist ornaments and above the door, an inscription in Cyrillic, dated with the year of building, 1747.

In the ante-temple of the church on the left wall is a portrait of Nicolae Mavrocordat and the bishops of Ramnic, Grigorie and Climent. Above the entrance door the church is painted. In the right side of the wall are painted the founders of  the church from 1747, and in the left side is painted Prince Mircea cel Batran with his son, voivode Mihai, holding in the left hand a panel with a history of the church. Mircea's portrait was made during the last restoration of the painting in 1998.

In the church's yard, on the right is "The Bastards' Cross", dating from 1718, which contains a document from the year 1580. Between 1992 - 1994 was built a new parish settlement in Brancoveanu style that will have many worship objects (filigram crosses, icons etc.) which are part of the national cultural heritage. The Annunciation Church is one of the most beautiful churches in the town of the reign of Mircea cel Batran, and its servants, yesterday and today, strived to highlight it, both for its religious mission and for its history.
