The Armenian Schools

Focsani, judetul Vrancea

AddressRepublicii, 3A-3B

Historically, the Armenian community in Focsani was one of the most important and well represented, being part of the category of the ones massive colonized in Moldavia of Stefan cel Mare. Next to the "Saint Mary" church were built in the nineteenth century the two buildings of the Armenian community, with the initial destination of secondary schools, and later schools with business profile.

The Armenian schools - historical monument - are located in the city of Focsani on the current Republic Boulevard, former site of the Armenian district. The two buildings built in the 1850s, on the left and right sides of the court of the "St. Mary" church precinct, have similar general appearance and the rectangular plane. The community had the intent to create a spiritual, administrative and educational complex.

Over time, the destination of classrooms expanded in both buildings, taking into account new concerns of community members.
The private pensionaries establishment at Focsani, Union High School and Superior Commercial School, have highlighted the utility of  an Armenian school, as community members began to show signs of a new trend, since there was a visible policy of integration into city and country life.

Unfortunately the number of members of the Armenian community in Focsani became smaller towards the end of the first half of the twentieth century, preferring for different historical causes a mass exodus to the country's capital, the countries of Central Europe and even America. Thus the two buildings became a historic symbol of the community.

After 1945 the two buildings have enjoyed a special treatmen, remaining in the property of the Armenian community in Focsani. The buildings have a relatively modest aspect, without the vertical development of their plan. Besides some simple frames to large windows, the buildings don't have decorative architectural elements on the facades.
