The Artillery Platform

Alba-Iulia, judetul Alba

AddressAleea Sf. Eugeniu

One of the attractions of the "Route of the Three Fortifications" is the Artillery Platform, on which are displayed three epoch functional cannons. They are fired in honor of the Alba Iulia municipality flag, which is displayed on the wall of "Alba Carolina" Fortress, every Saturday at 12 pm.

The salvo is fired by the Three Fortifications Route Guard, after the parade, using a technique from the beginning of the 18th century. The guard's parade (all in uniforms of the respective period) begins at 11 am, from the Military Camp.

The cannons operating on the artillery platforms were made right in the fortress workshops. They were established in the 16th century, the first information about them dating from 1580, when a lightning destroyed a tower with powder and the nearby constructions. The workshops were located in the south-east of the route, but their traces can no longer be seen today.

During the reign of Sigismund Bathory (1588-1602), the biggest cannon ever was manufactured in the workshops of Alba Iulia. It was called "Lupus" and for its transport to Sibiu 80 pairs of oxen were used.

In the second half of the 17th century, during the Rakoczi princes, father and son, over 1,500 people were employed in the workshops. In Alba Iulia, starting with the first half of the 18th century, the arsenal and artillery barracks are built, instead of the former Princely Palace and on the lands and the constructions of the south-eastern "Route of the Three Fortifications".

Charles VI of Habsburg is credited with the achievement of having built the Platform Artillery, monument of European military architecture, whose emblem adorns the flag hoisted on the artillery platform. Moreover, the House of Habsburg's emblem appears as a decorative element on all the Fortress' gates.
