The Bridges of the Danube Complex

Built between 1890-1895, the railway bridges on the Danube were the projects of the well known engineer Anghel Saligny (1854-1925). With the total length of 4087 meters at the time of the inauguration it was the longest railway bridge complex in the continental Europe and fourth in the world.

The designer and the manufacturer of Railway Ensemble Fetesti-Cernavoda, the academic Anghel Saligny made a tremendous scientific activity. He was born in May 1854 in the village Serbanesti (Tecuci County), in a noble family of French origin. He is studying at Focsani and Berlin, then teaches at the Polytechnic School in Charlottenburg. After graduation, he worked in Germany at the railway construction. At the age of 22 he comes back in Romania, becoming assistant of  Gheorghe Duca at the construction of the rail Ploiesti-Predeal, then director of works at the rail Adjud-Targu Ocna.

In 1884, he becomes Head of the Administration of Bridges and Highways CFR. He designed bridges, metal and masonry Buzau-Marasesti lines, Filiasi-Targu Jiu and built docks in Braila, Galati and Constanta. He was appointed director of the Romanian Railways after the inauguration of the Danube bridges. In 1889, he becomes director of the Constanta Harbour and CEO of Harbours and Communication Routes on Water. In 1910 Saligny becomes General  Director of Territorial Improvements. In 1881, alongside other engineers he founded the company "Politehnica", whose president was for 5 years. In 1897 he was appointed member of the Romanian Academy, and between 1907-1910, President of the Romanian Academy.
