The Bust of King Decebal

Orsova, judetul Mehedinti

Son of Scorillo and successor of Duras-Diurpaneus, Decebal (87-106) occupied the throne of Dacia in a moment in which expansionist tendencies of the Roman Empire, which established its frontier on the Danube. At the beginning of the 3rd century, almost 150 years since the affirmation of Decebal, the historian Dio Cassius makes him the following portrait: "He was very skillful in war and clever, knowing the opportunity to choose to attack the enemy and withdraw in useful time. Skilled in making traps, he was brave in battle, knowing to use a victory and to make a sleek escape from defeat, things for which he was for a long time a feared rival for the Romans".

Here began the construction of the Dacian King Decebal effigy in 1998 under the auspices of European Foundation Iosif Constantin Dragan. The effigy is proving to be a faithful copy of the image of the king Decebal and is titled Decebalus Rex. The figure of Decebal sculpted in rock, is situated at the Miraconia river flowing in the Danube and Road 57 can be seen, which connects Eselnita to Dubova and it also can be seen from the Danube.
