The Butchers' Tower

The seven towers that enhance the belt surrounding the city wall built in 1469 and the only concrete testimony of this wall that remained for centuries, the Butchers' Tower is situated near Izvoarele Market from Baia Mare. 462 years ago, namely in 1547, as it is attested by the documents in the National Archives of Maramures. The Butchers' Tower was built by Gaspar Dragyi.

The aim of this tower was to defend the town. The tower is made of stone and has massive walls of about one meter thickness. The building's circular shape and it has holes in the wall’s outward, which served as ramparts. It was rebuilt several times because of frequent attacks.

The tower was meant to defend the city especially by the butchers' guild. The building has a circular shape and has holes in the wall outward, serving as buttresses, and it is executed in stone and has massive walls about a meter thickness. It was several times destroyed and rebuilt. The restoration was carried out in 1930 and between 1959 to 1964. Being private property until 1977, of a family who used it as a coop for animals and birds, after the approach of the management of the County History and Archeology Museum, the tower passed to the museum’s heritage 32 years ago.
