The Carpenters' Tower

Sibiu, judetul Sibiu

The Carpenters' Tower is a circular shaped construction, bordered by the following portion through a pronounced cornice. From this level, the tower looks like an octagonal prism, finished in the top portion through the classical protuberance, supported by consoles with mouths of black oil between arches.

The military architecture is usually very conservative regarding the stylistic elements and is actually an utilitarian architecture. The third enclosure towers, as we know them today, were definetely adapted to firearms, but their prismatic shape (rectangular or polygonal) did not ensure the best protection against the constant improving artileria.

Knowing some references about the continuation of the strengthening works in the second half of the XVth century and the first decades of the next, we cand date the towers and the fortress in the same interval. Even if through new research may arise new specifications about the period of construction of the three towers, it is sure that the third precinct, after it suffered a series of repairs and upgrades, at the beginning of the XVI-th century, was dominated by towers. According to specialists "The upper city" was endowed with a considerable number of towers, although the plans do not mention any towers on Centumvirilor Street and the plan made by Bobel recordes only 19 towers.
