The Cave from Caput

judetul Bihor, Crisana

AddressLoc. Padis

Situated in the Apuseni Mountains, Padis area, Caput Cave is part of the largest karst complex in Romania. It was mentioned as Hamlet Cave, a name that didn't remain. Carved in limestone, the cave is situated at the end of Bear Spring Valley, a blind valley which is activated only in strong precipitation.

The only gallery of the cave, which is active, has a length of 1873 m and the entrance is located at the absolute altitude of 1065 m and has medium size, 10 / 6 m. A first jumping spring of 3 m in the slope almost vertical continues with another one of 8 m deep.
The hall at the bottom of the jumping spring  is actually a huge swirl on whose bottom are found polished rocks. The walls are covered with spoons. In rainy weather, on these verticals come down waterfalls which would not give chance of survival to speleologists if they were caught in this sector. A short and narrow corridor full of marmite, goes over another vertical of 25 m.

The walls and the ceiling present spoons and the floor is covered with a thick layer of silt. The landscape continues with 500 m. Then, follows a gallery of pressure in which barricades of silt, boulders and tree trunks rise up near the ceiling. This is another very dangerous area during the flood. The gallery opens into a large room and high descent, in the final. It follows a pressure tunnel, with slopes changing. The waters that are lost here appear in the first room of "Cetatile Ponorului" Cave.
