The Church of Saint Pious Paraschiva - Groaveri

Brasov, judetul Brasov

Phone0268 473978
AddressBaiulescu Gheorghe, 16

The Church of Saint Pious Paraschiva - Groaveri was built between 1874-1876 with the support of priest Bartholomeu Baiulescu, provost in Brasov citadel. The church was used as a cemetery chapel. Father Bartholomeu Baiulescu wrote a public document in order to gather the money needed to purchase land for the cemetery and the church in 1872.

The delegation of the Romanians from Brasov has asked Metropolitan Miron Romanul from Sibiu to consecrate the church in 1888, to use the cemetery chapel as a place of worship. With the blessings received, the chapel became the parish church from Groaveri and was used by the Romanians from the city until the Assumption Church from Council Square was opened.

The Church from Groaveri served as a military chapel for the entire garrison from Brasov between 1919-1946. Begining with 1954, Metropolitan Nicolae Balan has certified the place of worship from Groaveri as a parish church.

The Church of Saint Pious Paraschiva - Groaveri was built of stone and brick and has the plan in shape of a Greek cross with an octagonal dome above it. The church painting is the work of artists Vasu Iosif and Misu Pop.

The reputation of Saint Pious Paraschiva Church - Groaveri was given by the personalities buried in the cemetery: Ion Al. Lapedatu, Sextil Puscariu, Andrei Muresaniu, protopope Bartholomeu Baiulescu, Misu Pop, Virgil, Dr. George Baiulescu - first Romanian mayor of Brasov.
