In 1952, in Caransebes is created the Museum of Ethnography and the Border Regiment, with support from the city hall and with the initiative of academician Constantin Daicoviciu. Originally, the museum was named City Museum. In 1973 it changed its name into County Museum, then in 1991it became the Museum of Ethnography and the Border Regiment. In terms of architectural style, the building is part of the provincial baroque, being built during the time of the Austrian Empress Maria Therezia.

The Museum of Ethnography and the Border Regiment is divided into sections of ethnography of Caras-Severin and the history of the regiment to the border. The history department of border regiment is divided into archaeology (including exhibitions inside the National Reserve Tibiscum) and art and ethnographic reserve Bistra Valley.

The archaeology collection includes crystals of the Palaeolithic, stone axes and pottery objects from excavations at Tibiscum.
The museum also holds collections of numismatics, history (fire arms) and ethnographic data (agricultural tools, for fishing, for weaving, folk costumes, fabrics, wood and glass icons, ornaments).
