The Endless Column

Targu Jiu, judetul Gorj

AddressTudor Vladimirescu

In 1934, the sculptor Constantin Brancusi was invited to create a monument in the honour of Gorj County heroes and especially the resistance of Targu-Jiu population during the first World War.

The artist always wanted to do something for the country, so he hapily accepted the order, considering it as a climax in his career. Brancusi often had the intention to build up public monuments, but - except for the ensemble of Targu-Jiu - none of his projects has materialized. Some projects have been rejected even by the paymasters of the monuments, unable to act up to the artist's conception.

The theme of the Infinite Column obsessed the sculptor, who first wood carved it. It is a special structure which is different from classical columns with bases and abacuses, because it has no beginning and no end. It is formed of an infinite sequence of identical modules (pyramid trunks united by the big base), with semimodules at the ends.

Brancusi decided that in Targu-Jiu an Infinite Column in large dimensions was the best monument to commemorate the heroes fallen in war. He had the chance to receive the unconditional approval of the paymaster. Aretia Tatarescu granted him full freedom of action and helped him to obtain the necessary financial support.
