Phone0230 371720
AddressMihail Eminescu, 17

Housed in the former city hall of the city built in 1897, Vatra Dornei Ethnographic Museum is declared a historical monument. This museum exhibits the folk art of the area. Inside the imposing building of the City Hall Palace there is the permanent ethnographic exhibition. It provides a retrospective, complex and convincing picture on the rich traditional mountain civilizations of Bucovina (generally) and on Dorna area.

The exhibition present in Vatra Dornei Ethnographic Museum, aims to rebuild that wonderful universe in which man and nature merge into a deep and vibrant feeling. The exhibition is generous, thematically approaching almost all popular art genres from arhitecure, continuing with pottery, interior fabrics, port, habits and customs related to holidays throughout the year and those related to marriage.

The architecture is placed, as age, in the early nineteenth century. In this respect it is representative a model of a traditional house specific to Dorna region, the model being brought from the village Cosna. Porch gate is made and decorated with a lot minuteness through fret sawing by using the old astral symbols as decorative elements. The model of the traditional house is supported by several authentic architectural elements: columns and porch gates, yew wooden pegs for fixing the shingles on the roof.

Ceramics is diverse represented both as form, as well as artistic work, black pottery from the Marginea, imposing by sobriety, but also by the elegant shapes. This is richly represented by the works specific to the two major centers: Radauti and Marginea, but a less known center, at Paltinoasa.

In the sector of interior fabrics are exposed extremely old creations, of over one hundred years and the recent creations. Carpets, secular, wool towels, hemp and cotton, offers a performance of a great chromatic subtlety but also of ornamental forms stately combined. The blankets stories about terrible wrath of the mountain winters. They serve for covering the bed, but also the people.

A "budai"-vessel to put milk from Gura Negrii impresses not by ornaments or spectacular forms, but the circles of wood made from alder plug. Great ingenuity and precision cut, at the ends of the cap, makes it unique. As most men know how to handle the ax and other tools specific to this craft, at the ethnographic museum wood creation is rigorously represented. In this respect, two "scafaie" (kneading trough), purchased from the village Brosteni are uniques, made of so-called "hillock", abnormalities of the beech.
