The Fortress and its defense system

Medias, judetul Sibiu

The Medias fortress, a fortified place of worship, was built in the XII-th century. The three defensive were built by the order of Matei Corvin, probably between 1440 and 1534.

After the construction was finalized, the enclosure around the church received the name "castle". In 1736 the defensive system had three large gates, 4 smaller and 19 bastion-towers. After the demolitions in the twentieth century, there were left only 10 towers and fragments of the defensive wall. The main entrance to the castle is an arcade. During 1495-1498 Medias was called "civitas".

Officials at that time decided to extend the Trumpeters' Tower with three levels (to compete with the St. Stefan Tower from Vienna). Thus the tower has now a height of 68.5 m.

The symbol of 4 corner towers showed the right of the city to pronounce and execute the capital punishment.
This right was used when the witches went to the stake, for the last time in 1752. In order to stop the tilt, during 1927-1930 the tower was hemmed in a strait-laced belt of reinforced concrete up to the height of 14 m. Also the wooden statue of Turrepitz (Petrica Tower) was replaced, the old statue is exposed at the City Museum. A new consolidation operation was made during 1976-1977 with belt of 8 m.
