The Greek Church

Galati, judetul Galati

Greek Church construction began on 6 August 1866, when the cornerstone was settled, having the patron “Schimbarea la Fata" (“Changing the Face"). The dedication was made on 17 September 1872, by Bishop Melchisedec together with Archimandrite Eughenie Xiropotamo. The marble plaque is located in the pronaos with the names of the founders and two marble plates with the names of the great founders. The church plan is cruciform and there are two bell towers on the west side of the church and one tower.

The painting is the work of the painter Papadopoulos of Adrianople, and on the rood screen are big paintings that illustrate St. Virgin Mary with the Baby, Lord’s Rebirth, St. Gherasim, St. Sofia, St. Grigorie and St. Vasile the Great. The windows contain 8 strained-glass windows that present apostles and saints: Petru, Andrei, Marcu, Toma, Bartolomeu and Luca on the north side and Pavel, Simion, Ioan, Iacob, Filip on the southern side.

The church is located downtown, near Eminescu Park and has a monumental and very elegant architectural style. The marble shines everywhere, and the interior with glass windows, recently rebuilt, is superb, creating a special light. The atmosphere created is special. The service has passages in Greek.
