The History Museum of Aiud was set up as a cultural institution in 1950. The patrimony was enriched with Aiud vestiges discovered in and around the region.

Currently, the entire heritage of the museum amounts to approximately 30,000 museum objects, of which approximately 2/3 from the archaeological field. The History Museum is located since 1950 in the Princely Palace, part of the complex of fortified church medieval architecture, called the Aiud Fortress. The building preserves in its stone and brick walls memories of important events in the history of medieval and modern Aiud and its surroundings.

The History Museum exhibits archaeological remains, accompanied by auxiliary materials: texts, labels, illustrative material, which reconstruct the history of Aiud and its surroundings from the end of Paleolithic up to the set up of the first centrally managed and independent Dacian state led by Burebista. The chronological evolution of the Iron Age is presented in another hall. Here we find three-dimensional materials from the middle of the Hallstatt and auxiliary materials, a burying grave from Gimbas, presented "in situ", objects of iron, bronze and vitreous paste from the cremation tombs of Celtic warriors, ( approx. 400 BC), discovered in Aiud.

Arriving in another room, the visitor can see testimonials from the ancient period and the pre-feudal period: archaeological remains, particularly ceramics, from settlements dating from the classical phase of the Geto-Dacian culture (1st century BC-1st century AD).

The Museum of History will remain edifying for the Aiud lands since the pre-historic times until the end of the pre-feudal period.
Since 1999, the ethnographic collection was enriched with 50 pieces of art and handicraft. Pieces of scientific interest, resulted from archaeological diggings made at "Aiud Fortress" complex have been added to the archaeological collection. After being processed, these scientific components will be inventoried and recorded permanently in the Museum's archaeological collection.

The total area of the museum is 595 square meters, of which: 5 exhibition halls, 4 science warehouses, 1 library, 2 offices, 1 open exhibition space - lapidary.

Visiting hours:
Tuesday - Friday: 8 am - 4pm
Saturday - Sunday: 8 am - 12pm
