In the Europe of the ninetennth and twentieth century there were about 40 art colonies such as those in the exhibition at Barbizon and Pont - Aven - France, St. Ives - England, Lara - Netherlands, Skagen - Denmark, Worpswede, Darmstadt - Germany, Ascona - Switzerland or Szolnok in Hungary and not least the Colony of Baia Mare. The last one was founded in 1896 – by the opening of the "private school of painting" led by Simon Hollosy (1857-1918). He made a real "cultural transplantation", the Colony of Baia Mare became one of the most reputable and one of the few in which the artistic life was held continuously for more than a century. In Baia Mare, a colony of over 3000 artists from the country and from the Central and Eastern Europe worked, during its entire existence.

At the Art Museum in Baia Mare there are exposed only works made by artists who actually worked in the colony of Baia Mare from 1896 until today, this being the only museum of its kind in the country.

The Art Museum building was originally erected with a single level, dating from 1784. The interior was meant to be the Salinari Office of Maramures, after the early twentieth century it became the property of the lawyer Dr. Teogil Dragos, it was raised, at the new floor it was his residence. The museum, located at 200 meters from the old city center is an architectural monument.

Through the exhibited works, over 250 works by 90 artists are signed by well known national and international level plastic artists, and with a distinct profile, well-defined, the Museum of Art-Artistic Center Baia Mare is trying to illustrate the complex phenomenon in Baia Mare as an unique artistic experience in a way.

Besides the works signed by artists who worked in the Artistic Center Baia Mare, since 1896 until now, there are found in the museum collections over 3300 pieces, illustrating the European art of the XVII - XX and modern Romanian art, capitalized on the work of temporary exhibitions.
