The Museum of Ethnography

Founded in 1915, the Musem of Ethnography operates as a section of Oltenia Museum since 1928. Starting with 1966, it moved in the House of Banie, monument of medieval architecture, the oldest civil building in Craiova. It was built at the end of the XV century by the nobbles of Craiova, being rebuilt in 1699 by Constantin Brancoveanu. IThere is kept only a part of the cellars from the initial construction of Craiovesti nobbles. The basic exhibition of the Department of Ethnography presents values of the traditional Romanian creation from the cultural and historical province of Oltenia.

In the basement of the building are exposed tools used in traditional occupations: hunting, beekeeping, fisheries, animal breeding, farming, processing and preparation of agricultural products, viticulture and fruit tree growing. At the floor of the building, there are shown products used in the main artistic handicrafts that have conferred individuality to the traditional art in this part of Romania: woodworking, potter, weaving rugs and carpets, traditional clothing. In the last room of the exhibition can be contemplated one of the most valuable collections of icons on glass from Romania, formed of 54 pieces, which belonged to the family Stefan and Marieta Jianu, donated to the museum in 1977. The heritage of the Section of Ethnography consists of:
  • Collections of objects, tools, equipment used in traditional occupations: fishing, beekeeping, animal breeding, cultivation of plants, installations for processing cereal, wine and fruit tree products;
  • Collections of art objects, tools and equipment used in traditional handicrafts: woodworking, potter, weaving rugs and carpets, tissue from pieces of interior, a collection of icons on wood and glass;
  • Other collections: a collection of musical instruments, collection of painted eggs, a collection of documents and photos of MariaTanase, the collection of  ethno-folkloric documents, collection of ritual objects.
The specialists of the Ethnography Section organize: temporary exhibits with documentary-ethnographic values of traditional and contemporary art; communication sessions, symposia, meetings with specialists in the field, books, ethnographic films projections and other events; Craftsmen Fair - annually in the second decade of October etc.

The Department of Ethnography
offers to public: speciality information, bibliographies on the art values and traditional culture; specialized publications published by the museum with ethno-folk specific, including the yearbook "Oltenia. Studies and communications. Ethnography" and other popular materials: leaflets, guides, cards etc.
