Description

On the day of November 6th, 1989 at Baia Mare it was established a new museum: The Museum of Mineralogy. The idea of organizing a museum with such a profile, materialized after the year 1969, since the creation within the Maramures County Museum, a museum with historical art, ethnography profile, but without the concerns from the natural sciences area, till then, of a mineralogical collection. 

The current creation of the Museum as an institution of science and culture, offers to wide groups of people and to specialists a diverse range of exhibits. From the historically point of view, the museum was created in 1969 around a core of minerals numbering of 1502 undetermined pieces and non-inventoried, available for many years in a warehouse of the Museum of Maramures County. Gradually, through the collection of underground material, acquisitions and donations, the collection increased and its number reached in 1975, 3272 samples and in 1985, 14.274, and today over 16,000 samples inventoried and determined. The structured on mineral class is the following:

halide - 0.4%
oxides and hydroxides - 0.9%
Carbon - 26%
sulfates and tungsten - 18%
Phosphorus - 0.4%
silicates and quartz group - 26%.

On the origin of the deposits, the descending order is Cavnic, Herja, Baia Sprie, Baiut, Ilba, Sasar, Nistru, Baia Borsa, Razoare.

The collection of the Mineralogy Museum from Baia Mare possesses outstanding examples from several points of view, as follows:
rare species in the world of andorra, fizelyit, semseyit, klebersbergit, fuloppit, Berthier, cinnabar, pirotina, Rhodochrosite, Scheel, Wolframite, Vivian, cronstedtit; dominant crystal size on a sample: Stibine of Baiut or bathroom Sprie, galena of Herja, Sprie bournonit the bathroom, the Cavnic tetrahedrite, barite from Baia Sprie or Cavnic, Scheel of Baia Sprie, gypsum Cavnic Viviane of Ilba; different colors of minerals of the same species: white and black Herja Calcite, Calcite (manganocalcite) Pink Sasar and Cavnic, barite transparent, yellow, red, blue, green Cavnic, barite Baia Sprie red, white plaster, black Herja; large Druze monominerale: cuarturi of Cavnic or bathroom Sprie, calculation Herja, Sasar or Cavnic, Stibine of Baia Sprie and Baiut, gipsuri of Cavnic and Herja, barite of Cavnic and Baia Sprie, Rhodochrosite of Cavnic.
