The Natural History Museum of the University of Iasi is hosted by the former home of the chancellor Vasile Rosetti and was founded in 1844, built at the initiative of members of the Society of Physicians and Naturalists of Iasi, led by Iacob Cihac, Gheorghe Asachi, having as purpose the presentation of "earthly and underground riches of Moldova, and curiosities from other parts of the world".

This building has a square plan, with three jutties: two lateral, symmetrical and one on the front facade. Lateral  jutties, express in facade, the place of halls, two, of unequal length. The Natural History Museum building was built around 1800 in neoclassical style with local original elements. It presents a historic importance because, since 1841, in this building functioned the first society of physicians and naturalists, and then the first museum of natural history in Romania.

In the collections are still preserved pieces dating from the nineteenth century pieces, donated by the Metropolitan Veniamin Costache such as: a collection of mammoth bones and hairy rhinoceros, found hanging as a counter weight at a fountain of Rasca, Falticeni area. Also, the collection is completed with the Indian elephant Gaba, purchased by Mihai.

Also in the same period dates a Herbarium consisting of a collection of 2844 plants in Moldova, 3000 molluscs and insects, 795 vertebrates and 1500 minerals. The museum has an important educational role and contributes actively to the process of biological and scientific education. The base of study is provided by scientific collections, library and laboratories housed in the building.
