Made in neoclassical style with one floor, the North Theater is located in a building from the year 1889. Inside, the ball room was built to include 800 seats, is decorated with period-specific motives. Voijta Adolf and Sziksay were the architects, and the decorations and frescoes were executed by Spanraft and Hirsch.
The building is configured as it follows: facade, built in three registers, from which the center is separated into semicircular profile with a dome roof, the floor has a porch supported by four pillars, the walls of the windows are arched and have a frame finished in the top with triangular decorative frontons.

With a remarkable tradition, the satmarean country theatrical movement known the theatrical debut in 1790. This first theater performance was supported by a theater group led by Gyorgy Moricz. There are certified the passages of theater groups from Oradea and Debrecen, between 1814-1816.

Until 1848 theatrical performances were given in the building of the inn "The green tree" (on the place "White House" in Liberty Square), Jeney house (on the place of the current County Court), built in 1799, in the garden Kotro (located in place of the actual food market No. 1), was launched here last century artist famous Prielle Cornelia.

Between 1922-1924, G.M. Zamfirecu was the voice of the Romanian theater movement of Satu Mare. He organized shows with troupes of young amateurs in this city. Among the plays organized by G.M. Zamfirescu in Satu Mare are mentioned: "Patima Rosie" by Michael Sorbu, "Ariciul si sobolanul" by Victor Eftimiu, "Se face ziua" by Zaharia Barsan.

In 1932, the National Theater was on tour in Satu Mare under the protection of Ion Marin Sadoveanu, giving performances of "Hamlet" by Shakespeare, the title role is played by Aristide Demetriad. On December 6, 1947 is the opening of the stage of the Theater "Constantin Nottara" Satu Mare with the play "Paianjenul", by A.D.E Herz, in the presence of the general director of theaters Al. Kiritescu.

The North Theater
has worked like this until September 1948 when it entered into force the new system's operating theaters. Among the famous actors who have played at the theater "Constantin Nottara" giving a high prestige of this institution, we mention: Geo Barton, Helen Bodi-Mihut, Stefan Iordaneschu, Virgil Fatu, Iancu Economu, were permanent employees and among these, there were invited to play in Satu Mare actors like George Vraca, Grigore Vasiliu-Birlic, Dina Cocea, Marcel Anghelescu, Luci Stanescu, George Marutza, Florin Scarlatescu and others.

The North Theater has two sections: the Romanian and Hungarian section called "Harag Gyorgy". Besides the theater hall, there is a Studio room with 100 seats.
